The Godhead
This page of Scripture references is by no means meant to be exhaustive. Even all of the Holy Scripture is not an exhaustive treatment of God. The Best Communication to man of Who God is found in the Person of Jesus Christ, God in the flesh, God in our language. Yet, even when Christ came in the flesh, because He came in humility, the glory of God was veiled. In Scripture we have all we need to know about God, for God is the Author, and He in His perfection would leave nothing necessary out. What Scripture tells us we know is accurate. This page gives us a taste.
Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good; Blessed is the man who trusts in Him! Psalm 34:8
There is only one God – Deuteronomy 6:4–5 (NKJV) 4 “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one! 5 You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.
He exists eternally – Psalm 90:2 (NKJV) 2 Before the mountains were brought forth, Or ever You had formed the earth and the world, Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.
He exists in three persons – Matthew 28:19–20 (NKJV) 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.
He is a Spirit –John 4:24 (NKJV) 24 God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”
He is infinite –1 Kings 8:27 (NKJV) 27 “But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain You. How much less this temple which I have built!
He is immutable / unchangeable – Malachi 3:6 (NKJV) 6 “For I am the LORD, I do not change; Therefore you are not consumed, O sons of Jacob.
James 1:17 (NKJV) 17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.
He is holy – Exodus 15:11 (NKJV) 11 “Who is like You, O LORD, among the gods? Who is like You, glorious in holiness, Fearful in praises, doing wonders?
Revelation 4:8 (NKJV) 8 The four living creatures, each having six wings, were full of eyes around and within. And they do not rest day or night, saying: “Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, Who was and is and is to come!”
He is just – Deuteronomy 32:4 (NKJV) 4 He is the Rock, His work is perfect; For all His ways are justice, A God of truth and without injustice;
Righteous and upright is He.
He is a God of wrath – Revelation 14:10–11 (NKJV) 10 he himself shall also drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out full strength into the cup of His indignation. He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. 11 And the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever; and they have no rest day or night, who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name.”
He is all powerful – Psalm 147:5 (NKJV) 5 Great is our Lord, and mighty in power; His understanding is infinite.
He is wise and all-knowing – Proverbs 3:19 (NKJV) 19 The LORD by wisdom founded the earth; By understanding He established the heavens;
Romans 11:33 (NKJV) 33 Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out!
He is sovereign – Daniel 4:34–35 (NKJV) 34 And at the end of the time I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted my eyes to heaven, and my understanding returned to me; and I blessed the Most High and praised and honored Him who lives forever: For His dominion is an everlasting dominion, And His kingdom is from generation to generation. 35 All the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing; He does according to His will in the army of heaven And among the inhabitants of the earth. No one can restrain His hand Or say to Him, “What have You done?”
He is merciful, gracious, long-suffering, and abundant in goodness and truth – Exodus 34:6–7 (NKJV) 6 And the LORD passed before him and proclaimed, “The LORD, the LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth, 7 keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children’s children to the third and the fourth generation.”
He is the creator of all things – Genesis 1:1 (NKJV) 1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
Hebrews 11:3 (NKJV) 3 By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.
He is glorified by His creation – Psalm 19:1 (NKJV) 1 The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament shows His handiwork.
Revelation 4:11 (NKJV) 11 “You are worthy, O Lord, To receive glory and honor and power; For You created all things, And by Your will they exist and were created.”
He is the Great Communicator – John 1:1–5 (NKJV) 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. 4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
Hebrews 1:1–3 (NKJV) 1 God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, 2 has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; 3 who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,
He is Love – 1 John 4:8 (NKJV) 8 He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.
