“Repentance”
Matthew 3:1-2; 4:17

Repentance is a foundation grace – Hebrews 6:1

What is repentance? What are its component parts?

I.Repentance includes recognition, or sight of sin, the realization that I am a sinner!
1.We tend to have a distorted view of sin – Matthew 23:24
2.We tend to compare ourselves to one another, rather than to the perfect standard set in God’s word – James 1:22-25

II.Remorse, or sorrow for sin –
“A woman may as well expect to have a child without pain, as one can have repentance without sorrow.” Thomas Watson
2 Corinthians 7:10 For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death. What is the difference between godly sorrow and worldly sorrow?

III.Confession or taking responsibility for your sin – 1 John 1:9
IV.Shame or humility because of sin – James 4:7-10

V.Hatred of sin – 1 John 2:15-17
You cannot love Christ without hating sin for the two are proportionately opposite one another. The move love to Christ, the more hatred of sin, the more love of sin, the more hatred of Christ – Matthew 6:24

VI.Turning from sin – Joel 2:12-21

Why preach repentance?
1.Because it is difficult
2.Because it is necessary

Quotes on Repentance

“You cannot repent too soon, because you do not know how soon it may be too late.”
~ Thomas Fuller

“Be careful how you spend your time: Spend your time in nothing which you know must be repented of.”
~ Richard Baxter

“There are two kinds of repentance: One is that of Judas, the other that of Peter; the one is ice broken, the other is ice melted. Repentance unto life will be repentance in this life.”
~ William Nevins

“Repentance seems to be a bitter pill to take, but it is to purge out the bad humour of sin.”
~ Thomas Watson

“I believe a Christian on his death-bed will more bitterly repent than ever he did before. It is a thing to be done all your life long. Sinning and repenting-sinning and repenting, make up a Christian’s life. Repenting and believing in Jesus-repenting and believing in Jesus, make up the consummation of his happiness. You must not expect that you will be perfect in “repentance” before you are saved. No Christian can be perfect. “Repentance” is a grace. Some people preach it as a condition of salvation. Condition of nonsense! There are no conditions of salvation. God gives the salvation himself; and he only gives it to those to whom he will.”
~ CH Spurgeon
